An Evening Walk (Lunenburg, Nova Scotia)

After participating in a day long workshop focused on portraiture, I took a walk along the Lunenburg waterfront; I'd recently invested in a Canon 300mm f/4 L lens, so on this walk, that was all I worked with.

The rust on the sides of the trawlers was just perfect for the lens, and when combined with the soft evening light, the resulting photographs couldn't have been better.

At the very end of the walk, I came across an old weathered building, and made a number of images of it, including this.

A Summer's Evening (Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia)

Digital original, 2 frame stitch
I seldom visit Peggy's Cove during the summer, both because of its popularity with tourists, and the fact there are spaces close to it that find far more visually engaging. For this evening however, the plan was to meet with some other photographers (some visiting from the US) and enjoy the evening light.

Water pool reflections have long been a favorite subject of mine, and while most photographers focus on sunsets themselves, as the sun drops in the sky, and the shadows begin to grow long, I start looking for the brilliance of the evening sky to reflect in pools.

My final images of the day were of the sunset, but working with IR, I turned the camera right angle to the sun, and caught the shadows of the evening light.

A Session with a touch of Matrimony (Elmsdale, Nova Scotia)

Digital infrared original, 2 frame stitch
Jenn had asked months earlier if I'd be interested and willing to do a session with a veil theme; she was getting married, and wanted to model with her veil, and her mother's veil. An interesting proposition, and one that lead to some great results.

A second image from the veil session, this one working more with the light, than the shape.
Digital infrared original, two frame stitch
At the same time as I was working with Jenn, a friend of hers, K_ was along for company. K_ and I had worked together last fall, and this session (after Jenn and I were through working with the veil) was her first chance to work on her own.

The last work of the session was Jenn and K_ posing together; the narrow couch limited the pose possibilities, but what little time we had was put to good work.

A One-on-One Field Trip (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

Digital original
While working with a one-on-one student on close-up and macro skills, I made this image of a rather optomistic plant growing in the middle of a 19th century RML gun.

The discussion with the student about how colour comes from reflections was made easier with such a striking example of it right in front of us!

Natal Day Fireworks (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

Digital original
This was the third time I have experimented with this technique during fireworks, and by far the most sucessful yet.
Digital original
The challenge of this approach is to keep the camera completely stable while manually focusing through the point of focus; a solid tripod and a light touch sounds simple, but is pretty tricky in reality.

The best image from Natal Day fireworks was one of the last, of part of the finale; the red bursts make me think of jellyfish!
